Unlocking Insights: EVERSANA’s Value & Evidence Team’s Impact on Economic and Healthcare Resource Utilization Outcomes in Robotic vs. Manual Total Knee Arthroplasty

The use of robotics in surgical procedures is becoming increasingly popular, with the potential to reshape the landscape of modern surgery. In total knee arthroplasty (TKA), the increased adoption of robotics has improved clinical outcomes, including increased precision and standardization compared to the manual procedure. While these findings have been well documented, evidence of the impact on the healthcare system in terms of economic and healthcare resource utilization (HCRU) outcomes related to robotic versus manual TKA was lacking.

To address this evidence gap, DePuy Synthes (Daniel Hoeffel, Laura Goldstein, and Dhara Intwala), Robert Mayle, MD, and the Value & Evidence team at EVERSANA (Lisa Kaindl, Aidan Dineen, and Leena Patel) conducted the first systematic literature review and meta-analysis to compare HCRU outcomes (including operating time, hospital length of stay, odds of being discharged to home, readmissions, and emergency room visits) for robotic versus manual TKA.

Findings suggest that while robotic procedures may require longer operating times, there are significant benefits in reduced hospital length of stay, greater odds of being discharged to home, and reduced odds of readmission. This comparative analysis is impactful to patients, clinicians, and healthcare decision-makers. It may help to facilitate decisions regarding surgical TKA options that align most effectively with the needs of both hospitals and patients.

Additional members of the EVERSANA team (Di Wang, Ashley Bonner, Teresa Kangappaden, Joanna Bielecki, Anuj Saini, and Ismail Hweija) are recognized for their valuable contributions to the study.
