THE DETAILS

LUXEMBOURG CITY, Luxembourg – The Government Council approved a bill establishing the Luxembourg Agency for Medicines and Health Products (ALMPS), an agency that will oversee competences in the field of drugs, medical devices, and other health products such as cosmetics and food supplements.

While the competence concerning drugs, and health products, as well as medical devices or even certain aspects of the products derived from blood, falls within the missions of the Department of Health, Luxembourg is currently one of the only European countries not to have a National Medicines and Health Products Agency.

The ALMPS will make it possible for Luxembourg to manage the potential risks that certain drugs, medical devices or health products may have on public health, thereby guaranteeing a higher level of health safety for all health products throughout their life cycle, explained the Department of Health.

Moreover, the Agency will make it possible to ensure the obligations of the industry to notify shortages but also to legitimately participate in the coordination initiatives of the network of European agencies and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) aimed at facilitating prevention, identification, management and communication regarding shortages.

Étienne Schneider, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Health, said, “The creation of a National Medicines Agency is all the more necessary as the challenges we face are major, especially in this which concerns monitoring the quality and safety of medicines on the market, in order to prevent harmful, substandard or counterfeit medicines from reaching the public. ”

Luxembourg is also banking on the ALMPS to help diversify the country’s economy by enhancing the investments already made in the biotechnology sector, playing a decisive role in attracting actors to set up in Luxembourg.
