A Collaborative Approach to Integrating Digital Therapeutics (DTx) into the Italian Health System
Roberto Ascione, our President, Health Innovation, and Alberta Spreafico, PhD, MBA, Senior Vice President, Health Innovation, have co-authored the Italian publication “Digital Therapeutics: A Necessity for Italy.” This work continues the journey initiated in 2019 with the project “Terapie Digitali per l’Italia” (#DTxITA) and aims to promote the integration of these digital innovations into the Italian health system. The project also supports research, development, and entrepreneurship in Italy, aligning with the global digital medicine context and opportunities.
The publication features contributions from over 40 experts, including clinicians, patients, pharmacists, methodologists, healthcare company directors, economists, legal experts, regulatory specialists, and industry representatives.
In the chapter “Digital Therapeutics: The International Scenario,” co-authored by Alberta and Roberto together with Francesco Petracca and Oriana Ciani from SDA Bocconi School of Management, Center for Research on Health and Social Care Management, they provided an overview the evolving global DTx landscape, emphasizing the need—and opportunity—for defining an adequate assessment and reimbursement pathway also in Italy, in alignment with the evolving european and global context.
“I believe that collaboration between innovators and the various stakeholders of the national health system is fundamental in Italy and will serve as a path to encourage greater awareness, understanding, and adoption of this new generation of therapies,” says Roberto Ascione.
