THE DETAILS

BERLIN, Germany – The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds, GKV-Spitzenverband (GKV-SV), has noted that at the end of 2019, just under half of Germany’s clinical cancer registries were fully operational.

At the cut-off, December 31, the group says that just four – Baden-Württemberg, Bremen, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland – met eligibility criteria for the health insurances to be able to regularly finance the work of the clinical cancer registries.

GKV-SV also noted that regionally, there is “sometimes a clear need to catch up, particularly in data use and quality.”

“Cancer registries are a valuable aid to medicine and make an important contribution in the fight against cancer. Unfortunately, even after seven years, many federal states have not yet managed to set up fully functional clinical cancer registries,” explained Dr. Doris Pfeiffer, CEO of GKV-SV.

She continued, “Countries and registers now have to meet their legal obligations very quickly in order to ensure the eligibility criteria by the end of 2020. In some federal states, for example, the (population-based) epidemiological cancer registries must be made operational so that the (treatment-related) clinical cancer registries can function there at all. ”

However, despite the report, the organization also cites uncertainties missing and incomplete data sets. Because of this, new cases are not always reported in full to the group, and as a result, many registers are deemed incomplete.
