Spain Authorizes Centralized Purchase of 391 Million Euros Worth of Medicines

THE DETAILS

MADRID, Spain – The Council of Ministers has authorized the centralized purchase of 391 million euros worth of medicines under which manufacturers will be selected to supply different active principles at an estimated savings of 128 million euros for Spain’s National Health System (SNS).

Spain is looking primarily at immunosuppressants for autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and Crohn’s disease as well as for some cancers, including breast and colon cancer, and leukemia and lymphoma variants.

Additionally, Spain will be acquiring hormones such as somatropin, antineoplastic and immunomodulatory agents, and antianemic agents.

Ten autonomous communities are taking part in the centralized purchase (Aragon, Asturias, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castile and Leon, Extremadura, Galicia, La Rioja, Murcia, and Valencia. The National Institute of Health Management (Ingesa), which is responsible for Ceuta and Melilla, and the Ministry of Defense will also participate.

The purchases will be made through an open procedure and have an initial term of two years, with the possibility of an additional year extension.
